The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft plans to build a research and laboratory building on the premises of the Institute Center Stuttgart (IZS) for the institutes IBP and ILO. The construction project “Stuttgart Platform for Innovative and Sustainable Construction” – SPiN-Bau – is designed as a pure test building with office evaluation stations as an extension on the south side of the existing IBP pilot plant. Furthermore, the post office of the property and the farmyard will be integrated into the building as the infrastructure of the campus. The institutes IBP, ILO and IZS receive a central entrance area.
The mediation of generosity, openness and communication, which reflect the self-image of the institutes, takes place through the multi-floor hall. From the entrance area, the hall steps designed as sky ladder and the elevator are directly accessible.
The trapezoidal, five-storey building of the SPiN building, in keeping with its highly innovative character, will be clearly visible and accessible to visitors to the institute center and also to passers-by.
In order to accommodate the research intentions of the IBP, which foresee a partial replacement of façade elements, as well as the IAO’s desire to open the façade to the floor, a concept has been adopted that includes a superordinate structure into which individual façade elements can be inserted as post-and-beam constructions. These come back visually and are completely glazed as required, partly closed with glass panels or fitted in parts with other facade elements.
